Two common ways to book ocean cargo
FCL means Full Container Load. LCL means Less than Container Load, where cargo from multiple shippers shares container space.
Choose FCL when
- Your cargo uses most of a container
- You want fewer cargo handovers
- Loading control and schedule predictability are priorities
- The commodity or packaging benefits from dedicated space
Choose LCL when
- The shipment is too small to justify a full container
- You ship smaller volumes more frequently
- Consolidation timing matches your delivery requirement
- Cost per shipment matters more than the fastest possible transit
Compare the total movement
Do not compare ocean freight alone. Include origin pickup, consolidation charges, documentation, customs, destination handling and final delivery. Your forwarder should explain the complete scope.
